At Melian Dialogue, we are passionate about using AI and machine learning to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Our commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) is grounded in the belief that technology should serve humanity, especially those who are digitally excluded or marginalised.

Our Current Project: Addressing Financial Exclusion in Kenya

In collaboration with experts and local communities, we are tackling financial exclusion in rural Kenya through a transformative project aimed at supporting chamas—community-based savings and loan groups that are vital lifelines for many in these areas.

The Challenge

Many individuals in rural Kenya lack access to formal financial services, making chamas essential for savings, loans, and economic stability. However, these groups often face significant challenges, including:

  • Poor financial management.
  • Lack of transparency.
  • Limited access to scalable digital tools.

Our Solution

We are working on developing no-code mobile applications tailored to the specific needs of chamas. These user-friendly apps will:

  • Simplify financial management.
  • Enhance transparency and accountability.
  • Provide digital financial records that can open doors to microloans and other formal financial services.

The mobile applications are being designed through an Action Research framework to ensure they reflect the needs of chama members and their unique cultural and operational contexts. Best of all, these tools will be given away completely free to the participating chamas.

Key Outcomes

  • Digital and Financial Literacy: Members will develop crucial skills to manage and customize their applications, enhancing their digital proficiency and self-reliance.
  • Increased Financial Inclusion: By leveraging digital records, chamas (community savings groups) can gain access to microloans and a variety of financial products, empowering them economically.
  • Sustainability: Community-driven tools ensure lasting relevance and practical utility, fostering long-term impact and local ownership.
  • Scalability: This model is designed to scale, offering the flexibility to replicate its success in other rural communities across Sub-Saharan Africa.
